This Small Kitchen Remodel was SO MUCH FUN!

I’ve been wanting to do a little small kitchen remodel in our place for about a year now! With the launch of the brand new Hearth & Hand line coming out on November 5th I thought it was the absolute perfect opportunity to be able to spruce up our tiny little kitchen.

This little apartment is only about 500 square feet and it’s a rental. So I wasn’t wanting to make any major changes or put a ton of money into the makeover. Please note that once we move out our apartment is getting renovated by the owners so it didn’t really matter that I painted some tile or glued linoleum tiles to the wall.

Before Photos

Let’s get this small kitchen remodel started shall we?

Ok so here’s some before photos so you can get an idea of the changes we made. First off this backsplash drove me absolutely nuts! We have this absolutely gorgeous farmhouse sink… and then there’s this backsplash.

(Don’t even get me started on the janky ass sandstone countertop that’s falling apart)

I knew I wanted to get rid of the awful hanging pot rack and sheet metal above the range. I would’ve loved to change out the lighting as well but again, its a rental so I just made due.

It also drove me absolutely crazy that we didn’t have any counter space along that same side of the kitchen. There was plenty of room for possibly a small cabinet (which I looked for at Habitat For Humanity more times than I can count). Instead, I had this dreadful cage, shelf… thing. It’s bad, I know.

 

After Photos

First thing I did was take down the hanging pot rack and added these faux Carrera Marble Peel & Stick Vinyl tiles. While they definitely weren’t going to stick to the textured all on their own, they stuck just fine with some Liquid Nails. I used the Extra Heavy Duty for good measure. Cutting out the holes for the electrical outlets was a little tricky but easier than I thought it would be. First I removed the outlet covers. Then I measured several times to make sure I had it right.

Using a spanking brand new utility knife and a straight edge I ran over the cut 5-6 times just to make a start to the cut. Then I busted out my handy Milwaukee Drill and the smallest drill bit I had on hand. Going around the cut I started drilling holes into the tile about every 1/4 inch. This created a perforation which made it super easy to pop out the cut-outs.

 

 

Next, with the help of Zach, I hung up the shelves. It took a lot of debating as to whether or not to use these shelf brackets. At first, I wasn’t a huge fan, but once I painted them gold and assembled the shelf I was obsessed. And the fact that the brackets only cost about $2 bucks a pop was awesome. I decided not to stain or paint the shelf itself since our window casings are currently natural light colored pine as well (and it also made it just that much easier).

The bar cart is one I’d been eyeing on Target forever. Literally, the day I decided to start purchasing everything for the remodel it happened to be on SALE! Thank you Target Sale Gods! I’m basically obsessed.

At first, I wasn’t sure if I liked this whole mixing copper, gold, and silver thing but then I decided I just don’t care. I change my mind all the time about what my current metal of choice is anyway so why limit myself to just one. It’s a metallic free for all up in here! Plus, this gold bar cart had better reviews than the copper cart. It was a win-win.

I’m a HUGE fan of Irish Mules. They are my weakness. I found some super inexpensive copper mugs on Amazon and found a super cute little bottle of Ginger Beer at World Market (gah I love that place!). Should I be a little pissed that they aren’t exactly the same as the ones in the photograph on the site? Oh well.

A white marble cutting board has been on my wishlist for I don’t even know how long. So I found this adorable copper & white marble cutting board at World Market as well.

 

 

Can we talk for a second about how I’m totally in love with all of the Hearth & Hand line at Target… and also afraid for my bank account. I could’ve bought everything they had! Instead of going balls to the walls I decided to pull back on the reigns a little bit. Get ahold of yourself Sam! I decided on just a few of the essentials like the hand towels, potholders, bowls, plates, cups, and mugs.

 

 

As for that tile… well I decided to just paint it. I mean it’s going to get ripped out of there when we move out anyway. I figured if I just painted white in a semi-gloss it would just look like small subway tiles. Hey, it’s a rental ok?
